Clethra (Summersweet, Sweet Pepperbush)
We grow a plethora of clethra. One of our favorite native genera, although there are foreign members as well and we like them, too. All are deciduous shrubs to small trees with panicles of white (usually) flowers in Summer, sometimes extremely fragrant. Some species have beautiful peeling bark on older stems. Zones 4-9.

CLETHRA alnifolia Vanilla Spice™ 'Celeb'
The large flower spikes are loaded with fragrant, pure white flowers in late summer. The individual flowers are roughly the size of a dime, about twice the size of a typical Clethra. more info

(C) Here's a form with speckled variegation for all you variegated plant lovers. more info

CLETHRA alnifolia 'Ruby Spice'
(C8) The best pink flowered form available. Flower color does not fade to white as does 'Rosea.' Has nice dark green foliage. more info

CLETHRA alnifolia 'Sherry Sue'
(C8) 'Sherry Sue' is a vigorous upright- growing selection with pink stems from the Gulf Coast. Very late white flowers start in early September. It loses leaves later than other forms and may even stay evergreen in mild winters in the south. more info

CLETHRA alnifolia 'Sixteen Candles'
(C) Now 7 years old, the plant measures 30 inches high and 42 inches wide, a dense mound of foliage and stems. Flowers range from 4 to 6 inches long, open late June into July and without equivocation are spectacular. more info

This is very new, and possibly the most compact selection to date. Nice dark green leaves. more info

CLETHRA alnifolia 'Tom's Compact'
Maturing at only 3.5 feet tall and wide, non-suckering, free from winter dieback, and of dense habit with deep dark green leaves, this is one of the best. more info

CLETHRA alnifolia var tomentosa
(C) It was selected because it had significantly more of the feature which distinguishes this variety—namely, a downy covering of white hairs on the leaves and new stems, especially on the leaf undersides. more info

CLETHRA alnifolia var. tomentosa 'Cottondale'
(C8) One of the most distinctive clethra with racemes up to 16 inches long! Foliage is covered with fine white hairs lending an attractive greyish cast. more info

CLETHRA barbinervis
(C8) This small tree to 20 feet is grown mostly for its wonderful bark which peels in patches resembling a stewartia to expose the burnished cinnamon underneath. Blooms in summer in white panicles like pendant lilacs. more info
